Introduce Global Literature to Inner-City Youth

My students need 40 copies of the title "Iqbal."

Grades 9-12

Teaching tenth grade at a new small school in New York, we need to develop our book rooms so that the students can have a greater and more critical selection of literature to learn from. Located in a high-need area, our budget does not allow for new orders of books. Many of the books that we have are incomplete class sets and are not updated to the trends and interest of the students.

In the 10th grade, students will be exploring global literature in conjunction with learning about global history in their social studies class. Currently, we do not have many books that discuss issues and cultures from outside of America. It is important that students can make connections to their social studies class through reading stories about those countries they learn about. This would greatly help them to succeed when taking the Global History regents this coming June. It is also important for students to be exposed to novels from other countries because it is a crucial ability in these times to have worldly knowledge and be able to make connections to the global community.

We have few supplies for this school year and I am concerned that the school will not be able to provide an education that is rich with literacy. A title that would provoke students' thinking is "Iqbal", a powerful and true story about a young Pakistani boy who works at a carpet factory and makes a stand for child labor rights. This title is fast becoming a staple in any book room and it would be wonderful if students had access to it in our school.

Please help New York City's small schools succeed. We have been created to empower inner-city youth and give them a different way to learn and grow. Without help from the outside community, we will not be able to get everything we need in order to give everything the students need.
