I teach in a 5th/6th grade classroom of students coming from many different cultures. Our school serves a population that qualifies for 50% free or reduced lunches and we are a title school. With this challenge, our school is very focused on making sure our students perform at standard. We have been very successful in meeting this goal and our school has been honored for our academic excellence for the past two years. One thing we absolutely stress at our school is the importance of reading! In my class, reading is essential!

Partially because of my enthusiasm and my love of reading, for the past four years my class has won the school competition called the Battle of the Books. The books involved are books nominated by the Northwest Young Readers Awards and the Sasquatch Award committees. These are books that are relatively new and come recommended by individuals who have found them to be of interest to young readers. Students read the books, and then compete on their knowledge of the story, setting, characters, and different aspects of the books. The competition goes from a class competition, to a grade level, then school-wide, and finally onto the district level. As I stated, my class has attended the district competition for four years straight. Students really get into the books, have fun, and love to share their knowledge. Due to district cutbacks, I no longer have the budget to purchase the books for my classroom.

This coming year, along with our class focus, I would like to start a school-wide club focusing on the Battle of the Books. I envision a reading club that meets once or twice a week and discusses different books. Getting the funding to purchase these titles will really help start this process. The twenty titles that I have requested will really motivate students to read and by offering the club, I am providing an extra chance for students to share their love of reading. I have already read a couple of the titles, including Yellow Star, which tells the story of a young Jewish girl during the Holocaust, and Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat, which is a fantasy with lots of twists and turns. Both are excellent books that will be devoured by my students.

Your help will update our classroom library, promote a new reading club, and bring new exciting text to my students. We begin school again in August and I would love to have these books on display to entice them to jump into a new adventure. Thank you for considering donating to our classroom.
