Teaching my students to love writing is my passion! I incorporate writing into all subject areas in my 4th grade classroom. My suburban elementary school has an economically diverse population. Many students come from financially comfortable homes, while a small group of students live in government-subsidized housing.

Every year I struggle to help my students realize their potential as writers. They don't see themselves as writers, so it's my job to show them that they are. I want to create The Write Stuff club to foster a love of writing. I want the students who participate in this club to keep a writer's notebook, so they can practice their craft.

In order to make The Write Stuff club a reality, I need 12 copies of Ralph Fletcher's handbook titled "The Writing Notebook," which was written just for kids. Fletcher shows students how a writer's notebook can hold their ideas, as well as let them practice different types of writing. I also need a variety of blank journals. I want to let each student pick a journal that inspires him/her to fill up those blank pages with words. This project will allow my students to live like writers and to finally view themselves as authors. As a culminating project, I plan to have my students submit their writing for publication to Stone Soup and Kids Are Authors.
