Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a 4th and 5th grade split in a very high-need community. Most of my students are English Language Learners who still struggle with English.

So, tell me what your book is about!-ME Umm.... I don't remember...-STUDENT This is a typical response from my students during silent or whole class reading. I am looking at a large class of over 30 students this year. I had some of these students in 4th grade and their reading levels were quite low. My new students are coming from the bilingual room where they are also 2-3 grades below level in reading. While they are learning fluency and can read "quickly" in English, they can't remember what they read!

I would LOVE some exciting activities the students could use after reading to help them comprehend what they just read. What I have found is that if it is not interesting, they want NOTHING TO DO WITH IT! That is why I am asking for some games and projects they can create to help put their reading into their minds and hearts. I think that if the students can learn to do some of these activities at a center, I can work with struggling students in a small group. These materials really allow them to use their imagination and reflect on what they read.

None of us would be where we are today if we didn't remember something from our reading. I can't imagine staring at a book, just to pass time. My students spend too much time trying to figure out the words and not enough time reflecting on the reading. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of my students. I hope you remember a little bit about them after reading this. If you did, then you understand why I am fighting for my students' understanding!
