Students have experiences and ideas they want to get out, so they sign up for creative writing.

Now what? That is the expression on many faces in the creative writing classroom. It is a lack of know how. Writing the essay is taught a lot, but writing out one's thoughts -- seldom even touched upon. And what resources are there to guide them, to teach them how to start writing their own poem? None. There are no texts provided to students in this course.

By creating a playbook listing resources, students can tailor their learning in the classroom. By having at least 10 books, they can work together in small groups to learn the process of creative writing and to take the risks recommended in the books. "Poetry 180" was written to engage students in poetry. It is titled after the 180 days students are required to attend school. Former U.S. Poet Laureate, Ted Kooser, wrote the "Poetry Home Repair Manual" in accessible, easy to grasp language. He also provides excellent, credible instruction in the art of writing poetry. Water colors and other art supplies are the medium which allow students to turn their work into a project. To realize writing is as simple as painting. Just do it!

By supplying this classroom, you allow students to become more confident in who they are becoming on their unique journey through high school. They learn that their thoughts, experiences, and ideas matter and warrant expression.
