Complications - Reading to Learn About the Human Body
My students need 20 copies of "Complications - A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science" and one audio CD set for those students who are special needs in the area of reading.
Bring the real drama of medical residents and surgery into the classroom by allowing students to read true stories from a Atul Gawande as he goes through the trials and tribulations of becoming a surgeon. I currently teach at a rural high poverty high school with approximately 180 students in Oklahoma. I teach biology and anatomy/physiology to students in grades 9-12.
Our school is currently below average in all areas and struggles to motivate children to make the move from generational poverty onto college. The student body is approximately 70% free and reduced lunch. Students have few if any support systems outside of the school. On a regular basis we discuss the unique and interesting medical cases on shows such as House or Grey's Anatomy; this book would allow me to build upon these discussions by providing "real life" stories about surgical residency. Hopefully this will encourage students to understand both the positive and negatives of entering such a career field.
I firmly believe this book will assist students in attaining a higher level of reading comprehension, develop a greater appreciation for the sciences and bring TV shows such as Grey's Anatomy into a real perspective by uncovering the myths and realities of such shows.
By supporting this project you may very well be encouraging/supporting students to move on to college and enter a career in sciences. More and more studies are being released discussing the decreasing numbers of young people moving into a career in science. This project may very well help students in deciding a career in medicine is possible to them. Additionally this will improve reading skills and vocabulary which all students will need in order to be successful not only in college but in whatever they choose to do after high school.
