I teach math and writing to 6th grade students in one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. As you can imagine, there is a wide range of economic instability in their homes, and in the schools, due to very stressful times.

For the first time, all of the middle schools in our district are switching the 6th graders to be taught in the elementary schools. This has caused devastation in the students who expected all year long to be exiting the elementary schools and starting their new journey in the middle schools. In addition to the changes occurring in our school system, lack of educational funding, and jobs being lost, 6th grade is a very traumatic year of emotional and physical change among students.

I plan to help motivate and inspire the students to see how beautiful and precious individuals they are, as they grow during this very stressful year. I plan to have the students keep daily journals using their deepest thoughts and superior writing skills and take weekly pictures of themselves, their projects, accomplishments, obstacles, etc., share what they wish, and keep secret what they wish, and finally, make a digital album of their school year. By learning how to use a digital camera, photo frame, and recordable DVDs, they will acquire lifelong technological skills and keep a remembrance of the year they thought wasn't going to be any good, but that I know will be phenomenal!

Your help will make it possible for my students to keep records of their school year, the good days and the not-so-good days. With motivation, perseverance, and caring...together with the guidance department, their families, and me, we will ensure that these students see the light, and record it. Sometimes change is good and that as they grow this year, physically, academically, and emotionally, they can find the positive in every situation. By the end of the year, they will have a movie album that demonstrates that learning is never-ending, that they are special, and that they can make it through anything!
