I teach high school language arts to ninth and twelfth graders. The school is home to 1,780 students where approximately 60% of the students are on free or reduced lunch.

The financial status of the families of many of our students has been recently affected by the recent closing of the town's major employer. Now, more than ever, it is important to direct students to post secondary education. Many of our students, however, lack an ability to write effectively. They arrive not only without a developed understanding of their own personal writing voice but also without a strong approach to writing. Without an ability to write well, students are lacking a means of communication. Limiting means of communication can be most detrimental in today's fast paced society.

Last year I submitted a proposal to my principal to implement a writing center as part of the English/Language Arts department. I wanted to help my school provide an opportunity to support student writing not only within the English department but across multiple curriculum's throughout the school . Right now the center is located within my classroom. Students who visit the center are required to hold writing conferences and peer editing sessions by shifting traditional student desks. Further, students have limited spacing when it comes to areas to draft and word process documents. These three round tables will provide a separate area of the classroom for students to draft, converse with writing center tutors, and edit with peers.

Your help will ensure that not only my students but all of the students within the school will have an opportunity to improve their ability to write. Your help will make it possible for almost 1800 students to be comfortably exposed to formal writing instruction and support outside the traditional school day. I implore you to help my school outfit our newly implemented writing center. This opportunity to provide additional writing support will make for effective communicators well into the future.
