Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Education is the window to the future and the window is opening with a lesson on how the human body works. I teach 8th grade Science in a rural, low-income school. Nearly all my students are minorities and over half of them are from migrant families and are second language English speakers.

Our students face real life challenges not just in the future, but in everyday life. Their lives are surrounded by gangs, drugs, crimes, and early teen pregnancy. Many of them come from homes where education and dreams are distant and unachievable. To combat these troubles and make education relevant, I have focused on bringing a speaker who is a physicians assistant. She grew up with the same background and can personally relate to the students about how their dreams are achievable. However, I also want to give my students hands-on experience on how the human body is put together and how all the systems work together.

In order to help my students identify personally with our guest speaker, I want them to have a chance to experiment with the human body and heart model. Having these supplies will help the students understand how the human body is put together and function of the different body systems. At 8th grade level, students are building understanding of the opportunities available to them in the world. This is a great time in their lives to give them new experiences that will shape their future. I work really hard to show them as many options and to present a variety of topics in order to keep the students engaged and to reach each one with an idea to spark their minds.

With your help, my students can make better choices for their future and see how college is achievable to them. With your help, this intro to human anatomy can inspire my students to pursue a career instead of a job. With your help, we will continue to explore our world.
