I work in a 9-12 high school, teaching five classes of 30-33 students. This is a brand new school, and next year we will have seniors for the first time. As a result of the budget crisis, I will not be able to order current novels for my contemporary fiction class. The course is for seniors and it is the last chance I have to impact students’ literacy.

I strive to provide engaging texts and reasons to continue reading after leaving school. The more students read, the better they are at using language, learning vocabulary, and being critical thinkers. While 99% of our population is literate, a great deal of this literate population does not actively read outside of work when they leave school. I find it increasingly difficult to engage students with texts that were written over 60 years ago. The value in teaching contemporary fiction is that students make connections between literature and their lives. We study emerging themes and issues in our society and find books that address parallel ideas.

To engage students in reading, I teach with literature circles. The students work in groups of 5 - 7 as they read, question, analyze and discuss a contemporary novel. I participate in each group’s discussion on a rotating basis. I guide but do not dictate any one way of understanding the novels. As they become engaged in the novels, they demonstrate excitement at their ability to make their meaning of and connections to the world around them. Providing seniors in high school with student-directed learning gives them confidence in self-selecting reading material when they leave the classroom. My goal is to provide the students with 7 options of texts they can read for each literature circle rotation and then to place them in a group with one of their top two novel choices. Their choices include novels in different genres, novels that reflect different cultures and novels with varied themes. Because the structure is based in student-choice, I engage more students. The excitement generated from reading truly contemporary fiction lets me know that I have impacted these students’ opinions about reading literature.

I share my passion for literature with these classes every day as I give book talks about contemporary fiction and try to create energy and desire for reading. You providing our classroom with copies of these texts would allow my students to leave high school not only literate, but with a desire to continue to understand the world around them through reading. Whether the students are leaving the classroom for college, technical school, or to join the work force, I sincerely believe that they will be better prepared to contribute positively to our community because of their increased exposure to a variety of texts and themes. In this request I am hoping to receive copies of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Bel Canto, Snow Falling on Cedars, and Animal Dreams. Thank you for your time and generosity!
