Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students keep begging me to teach them how to fuse glass. I am an art teacher in a high Poverty high school in rural North Carolina. My typical student isn't interested in becoming a professional artist, but even the most uninterested student is amazed at three dimensional art. I try to do a lot of three dimensional work with my classes, but there are only so many ceramic projects that I can do and hold that enthusiasm. I don't have a lot of money in my budget to buy the supplies needed to do a comprehensive fused glass project with all of my students, and I can't bring myself to pick a few out of the group to participate. I want them all to get the same experience.

I have taken a few fused glass workshops on my own in the last few years and I have worn some of my jewelry creations to school. Every time I have on a piece of my fused glass jewelry, my students ask when they are going to get to work with glass. EVEN THE BOYS! It is so amazing to hear them so interested in art and how it's made. I always have to tell them that there isn't enough money in the budget to buy the supplies for all of the students, which is always answered with a huge group disappointed grunt.

I currently have a kiln in my classroom, which is the most important aspect of "FUSING" glass. All we need to start creating is the glass, and lots of it. We also need some tools to cut the glass and findings to finish off some wearable art. I always do a very comprehensive unit on color theory in the 2nd half of the semester. This glass fusing project will be perfect for teaching the kids about color and the different effects of mixing, layering and using opaques. It will also help then see that art is not just paintings on the wall.

Helping us with the funding of this project will show my students that they are important and deserve this opportunity. A lot of times the kids comment on the fact that there isn't enough money to buy them supplies. It makes them feel like their artistic talents aren't appreciated and that no one cares about the things they are interested in. When I told my students that I was going to write a grant to get these supplies they got very excited. They were so excited at the fact that a stranger would care enough to donate money to them so they could make art. They were so optimistic and energized. It made me even more excited to do this project with them. When the students are truly interested they do awesome things.
