Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I refer to the 2nd grade students in our class as the Brilliant Backpackers because our classroom theme is traveling around the world. Backed by our motto of "Work Hard. Get Smart. Go Far." we are both using and celebrating our mastery of state standards as we make our way around the world. Despite the many challenges that face students growing up in a high-needs community, the Brilliant Backpackers are invested in their own education because they know that performing well in the classroom affords them endless opportunity in the world at large. Every time the class averages 85% or more on a significant assessment we travel to a new country, meaning we study it for three weeks and the fourth week we literally transform the classroom into that country! The students take ownership of this by grading and tracking their assessments in their very own “Passports.” In doing so they make the connection between the learning that takes place in our classroom and its application outside our four walls. In the fall we visited Mexico, where our activities included learning Spanish, studying Jose Guadalupe Posada and Frida Kahlo, writing stories based on Aztec and Mayan artifacts, and celebrating the Day of the Dead. Our former classroom turned into an overview of Mexicanidad: textiles, masks, papel picado, and images of cultural and historical significance made all of our learning that much more tangible. Prior to Mexico we paid a visit to France where students worked on their French and mingled with the likes of Henri Matisse and Marie Antoinette. More recently, our travels have included Egypt and India. In our class there is no excuse for wasted learning time, not when there are so many things to do and so many places to go! In order to make the Brilliant Backpackers' learning experiences as authentic as possible I need to provide them with a variety of both culturally relevant and up-to-date texts. Our class library is in desperate need of additional multicultural titles because students deserve the opportunity to view the world through the eyes of children their age from various geographical and social contexts. Furthermore, students should be developing their reading and critical thinking skills through hands-on experience with informational texts such as magazines and newspapers. Student subscriptions to Time for Kids would fulfill this need as well as invest students in the excitement of expecting monthly packages of learning. With your help the Brilliant Backpackers could authentically explore the world from the comfort of our classroom!
