Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Think of a room of 12th grade Latino students who have been in the country on average of five years only. They believe in the American Dream and are working hard to learn English and understand the American experience. The gaps of comprehending what America is loom large. What is the Depression? What did American look like when Cesar Chavez led a lettuce boycott? What did the US say when Castro succeeded in his revolution? How did the US feel about Trujillo? They can start to understand these times and issues through literature such as Grapes of Wrath, but that is only part of the picture. Imagine students being able to see the actual newspaper pages printed during those times.

My students understand that they not only need literacy in a language, but they need cultural literacy. We have an idiom wall that they build and employ in their lives. The monkey section, for example, has "monkey on my back, monkey around, monkey business, monkey wrench in the works, and barrel of monkeys." Students love and value getting this kind of intimacy with the language. It is hard, however, to get the same kind of cultural literacy. When we studied Grapes of Wrath and the Great Depression, they relied on Wikipedia as their major source. Our school is rich in technology for a high needs school, but there is no library, and no rich resource for books.

The New York Times has published a book which captures on paper the 300 most important front pages from 1851 through 2008. A DVD set includes all of the other pages not reproduced on paper. This combination allows students to see the value of an actual daily newspaper no matter what the time period and to feel the immediacy of history. It gives them an entry-way into the American experience. It gives them the possibility to see what the US had to say about the Depression, Castro, and Trujillo "back in the days." It helps them see that Wikipedia is just the surface and one source of information. This experience will, in other words, open a new world of information.

Your help will enable my immigrant students to share the discovery about the American experience through the US "newspaper of record." You can help students as they define who they are in this new country and help them learn more sophisticated ways to gather information and define their own American Dream.
