Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an English teacher at a charter school where over 75% of the students are Latino and most are low income. When they come to my class, most of my students don't express an interest in reading. This is unfortunate because the more one reads, the more one improves in a variety of different areas, including writing, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. I would like to start the year with a book that will both interest and challenge my students. "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson is the perfect novel to do this. It is about a teenage girl who enters the 9th grade and is unable to speak up about a rape that occurred the summer before. Not only is this book packed with literary devices, it also opens the door for students to discuss a variety of serious teen issues. Students love to read about a character who is starting high school just like they are. By starting with a high interest novel, I am hooking my students into reading for the entire year. Please help me bring this novel to my students! Thank you in advance for your consideration and for giving my students the opportunity to appreciate all that reading has to offer.
