I teach second grade at an elementary school in northeast Alabama. My students are of different backgrounds, socioeconomic groups, abilities and race. My classroom is truly a slice of America. It is a great place to teach and learn!

Teachers in Alabama have very limited funds to spend in their classrooms. Most of the funds we receive must be spent on consumable products. School funding has been cut by 9% this year causing our classroom supply money to be reduced even more. There is no money for any project that steps outside the box or requires additional funding. That's where your donation can help.

Fluent readers recognize words automatically. Students improve fluency through repeated reading of text. The challenge for today's teacher is to find authentic reasons for students to read and reread text. In order to help my students become fluent readers, I need a Flip Mino camcorder. Here's my plan: Using this pocket-sized camcorder, I can easily record students performing a Readers Theater play, reciting poetry or reading a story "Reading Rainbow" style. As students rehearse their lines for a performance, they have a legitimate reason to read and reread text and practice fluency. Additionally, students improve expressive reading, proper phrasing and speed because they know they are performing for an audience. Who is the audience? Parents! With one click I can share the images by uploading to parents' email accounts or to our school website. Parents will see how fluency looks and sounds. Next, parents will provide the feedback and positive reinforcement that will encourage my students to come back to school and start rehearsing for their next performance. The adage "Practice makes perfect," is certainly true when it comes to fluency.
