Hello! I work at the Granville T. Woods School of Science and Technology in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. I am the proud teacher of the 6th grade Level 4 Class of 2016 (that's the year they'll all graduate from college). I teach ELA, Social Studies, and Math. My 6th graders this year have higher reading scores than either the 7th or 8th graders in my school, but I lack the resources to provide these ambitious, energetic learners with the books they need to fulfill their reading potential. We couldn't start reading workshop in my classroom until the third week of school because we didn't have any books in our library. Although I have sated their appetites a quick fix infusion of Horrible Harry and Junie B. Jones that we received on emergency order, that won't last them long – we flat out need more books in our library. Ominously, we lack any sort of leveled non-fiction texts. The Non Fiction Leveled Library from Lakeshore contains books on subjects that appeal to my scholars: the moon, cowboys, snakes, Easter Island, and more. These texts will be an important step in creating a diverse library; I want to make sure that in addition to loads of fiction that my scholars have the resources they need to excavate the intricacies of the world around them. Additionally, Landforms, Ecosystems, First on the Moon, and The Snake Scientist have valuable crossovers with my scholar's science curriculum. Anne Frank, Easter Island, and Cowboys of the Wild West will be used as reference points during our social studies curriculum. With twenty seven scholars in my class, these texts will go a long ways towards ensuring that everyone has something engaging and meaningful for them to read. Every scholar will be able to read these books, providing over 500 hours of crucial literacy to my class. One of the goals for the Level 4 Class of 2016 is to read 2016 books this year, but to do that we must have high-interest leveled texts such as these. Please help the Class of 2016 get the books we need to succeed and achieve our ambitious reading goal!
