It's a Jungle Out There...No! It's a Rain Forest.

My students need books, resources, such as activity books, and art supplies, such as paint and animal decorations, to learn about the Rain Forest and construct a life size Rain Forest in the classroom.

Imagine traveling into an Amazon Rain Forest or into the Sahara desert. For some of us these trips are easy to imagine and visualize. For some of us, the reality of traveling to these places may not be out of reach. However, for my 19 Fifth Grade Scholars, seeing the world is not a luxury that they have been afforded. I teach fifth grade in an inner city, low-income school in TN. My fifth graders have awesome imaginations and zeal for knowledge.

I really want my students to have a broad perspective of the world. I want them to know about diverse cultures and places in the world. While I would love to take each of my students on a trip to the rain forest, I know that is not very feasible. However,I can bring the rain forest to my students. My idea is to spend a unit studying and learning about the unique ecosystem of rain forests. We will read books and engage in learning activities that will help them learn more about rain forests. The ultimate culmination of the unit would be to actually build a life size model of the rain forest in our classroom.

To complete this lofty and ambitious project, we would need resources that will help them learn about the rain forest and art materials that we will use to construct the rain forest. We will use paper to make trees and felt to make toucans. I can visualize billowing green paper representing the canopy of the rain forest. With these resources, a whole new world will come alive for my inquisitive and zealous fifth graders.

This would be a very unique and wonderful opportunity for my students and your help will ensure that my Scholars are exposed to a new world, the colorful and beautiful world of the rain forest. While we may not be able to buy 19 airplane tickets, we have the power to bring the rain forest to these students. This project will literally mean the world to my students.
