History Comes Alive- In our Own Backyard- Part Two!

My Fourth Grade class needs 6 Flip Video Cameras so they can record interviews of older members of our community and add to our online archives. Students will be working in small groups to set up and conduct interviews. These video archives will keep our history alive forever!

Our fourth grade class has been working on an ongoing local history project and have become successful partners with our local historical society! We have already researched landmarks around our school, and added to the archives at our local historical society office. We have created a beautiful informational documentary about our project using still photographs, teacher-video, and music. We have shared our work at Educator conferences and even on local cable television! My students feel empowered and want to do more!

Students now appreciate that history can be lost forever if not recorded! We want to further save our local history by recording short oral history interviews and putting these online. We will also take student clips and add them to our documentary. Students are excited to get their grandparents and elderly neighbors on tape and share their amazing stories.

With flip video camera and questions in hand, students can plan, create, and upload the video themselves. For our project to be truly student centered, they need to do all the work. The flip video camera will be easy for them to manipulate so they can do all the writing, recording and edits. They can produce something that will be valued by generations to come--priceless!

You can make it possible for my students to honor their family and community history by providing a lasting tribute to those who came before them. Even better, you can empower them to contribute something to their community that will never be forgotten.
