Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach reading and grammar in one of the most culturally diverse schools in the United States. I teach 110 students from countries most people have not even heard of. It is the best and most rewarding job anyone, who selected to become an English as a Second Language teacher, could ever imagine. Today, I learned that my style of teaching grammar to my students could get a big boost by incorporating my beloved IPod into my lessons.

I love my IPod. It is full of music and pictures and I can drown out the world whenever I need to by just plugging in the headphones. One day, when I was listening to a radio show (yes, it has radio too!) I heard the announcer say, “:And you can also listen to our Podcast …” Hmmm, PodCast? What is that?” After searching my computer for IPod I found pages after pages of things I can do with my IPod besides listen to music. Who would have known! When I found a site where I can download grammar and listening skills for students, I was hooked. I have to have an I Pod for my students. It is amazing how far technology has come in terms of helping students learn. Since all of my students love technology, I will impress them by giving them the type of instruction they grave. Most of my students do not have the money to own their own IPod. I already envision my next lesson to have an IPod lesson included in it so that my students can take full advantage of what is out there. With this type of supplemental learning, I know I can make the difference between boring and fun for students.

If you remember your grammar lessons from school, you probably remember that there were only so many ways your teacher was able to make the lesson exiting for you. Teachers still face this problem. However, with the new technology of an iPod, I will be able to bring some life into my lesson and my students’ learning.

Please help us bring this type of technology into our classroom. From what I saw when researching iPods and their use in the classroom, I found that the list is virtually endless. I want to being this type of endless learning home to my students.
