Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 5th grade elementary teacher primarily of English Language Learners and Special Education. Our school houses over 2,000 primarily Latino children and we are always seeking ways to enhance their vocabulary skills. The obstacle is that they have been using adult-type dictionaries in the classroom which have proved to be 'not very child-friendly'. The resources that we have are over twenty years old. We have created vocabulary boxes for their 'difficult words', but since there are no illustrations or age appropriate definitions, it is a very difficult task for them. So, in essence, every time they look up a difficult word in our current set of dictionaries, I have to stop and explain the definition of the definition! How are they going to enter Middle School as 6th graders with barely a 5th grade vocabulary? These dictionaries will hopefully help them better prepare for the work they will need to achieve success in Middle School. Our school library is under funded and our class computers are antiquated. That leaves us with learning the old fashioned way...LOOK IT UP! It is a critical tool for them to have, like a life-long gateway into Literacy! There is just so little for so many...
