The most neglected skill for inner city students is the skill of academic writing. I teach in such a school that is high poverty with some of the lowest test scores in our city. Some students, however, are succeeding and moving on to some of the best colleges in America.

In analyzing their test scores, it is apparent that their writing skills are extraordinarily weak. Part of the difficulty is the size of the classes. Even in large public universities, writing is taught in small groups. At an inner city school, small classes are not an option. As teachers we must be innovative in teaching all students to write so they can be prepared both for college and for the high stakes tests that will help them gain admission.

Generally, students in any one group make the same types of errors; either errors in thinking or more straightforwardly, in grammar. Students are helped when they can see the work of their classmates. At this time, I show the students the work of their peers by either xeroxing or re typing it and then distributing it for class discussions. These are time consuming solutions. A system that projects white paper items on the screen would mean that we could have many more items to discuss and their writing levels would should more significant gains in a shorter period of time.
