Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our school is on the east side of town and our students would qualify as a high-need community. I teach 6th grade English and Reading. I need to get a reading program going in our school. I have seen this program work at the high school level and want to use this rewards program for my students in 6th grade.

Our students do not read. They watch video games and TV. They need to have an incentive to read books. The incentive is to see their name placed on the star and put up outside the door of our classroom or inside the room. Once one student sees someone’s name, he/she wants to have one too. Reading is how they learn vocabulary and learn background knowledge. Writing a name on a star and placing it for all of the students to see is a great way to get them to read. The only thing though is it costs money to buy the stars. It is a simple and easy way to get them to pick up a book. I need stars to place on the wall when a student reads a book. They have to read a chapter book, show it to me, and give me a description of the book. Then they receive their star with their name on it.

Then they receive their star with their name on it. The students start reading immediately and try to read one book each week. This is an easy way to get them to read. They take their stars home after each quarter and start again. Even students who have never read a book from cover to cover will read.

Please support this program in our school. Our students are mostly second language learners of English. If they cannot read, they cannot pass our standardized tests. They also have to read fast enough and understand enough to pass. Our students do not usually pass the CRT testing each year. I believe that with the use of this Star Reward Program, our students will increase their reading skills and begin to pass the state exams. Thank you for supporting this program.
