Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 7th Grade Social Studies and Reading. We are a Title I school. Most of the students are economically disadvantaged. Most come from families of recent immigrants. A small minority are Native-Americans.

The biggest obstacle to learning for most of these students is the fact that they are English Language Learners. They not only need to learn the lesson content, they must also learn how to read, write, and speak it in English. The ability to associate words, concepts, etc. with pictures greatly facilitates ESL learning.

A digital camera and photo printer will facilitate the students' ability to associate lesson content with English language. Photos will also provide reinforcement and enrichment to students who are English language proficient. The camera can be used in a variety of ways. As an example, I had the students examine census data for our community and create a poster. This effort would have been greatly improved if they could have taken photos of the relevant parts of the community to include on the poster. We wanted to include a photo on each passport, but had no camera. The students are doing a garden project as part of their study of farming on the Great Plains. IF we had a camera, we could have recorded different growth stages for the plants. When I have guest speakers visit the class, it would be helpful if we could photograph them and their exhibit for later discussion and clarification.
