Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Teaching students to overcome extreme adversity. I am currently teaching ELA for 6th - 12th grade at a school exclusively for pregnant and parenting teenagers.

Our students come from an economically disadvantaged community, and 100% of them are enrolled in the free lunch program. I want them to see how some adults handle adversity, regardless of the odds stacked up against them.

I need a set of classroom books that will stimulate my students' critical thinking skills. The novel I have chosen, Five against the Sea, is a non-fiction book that hits very close to home for my students, since many of their families are involved in the shrimping industry.

Your assistance will provide my students with the opportunity to see how their parents sacrifice and overcome obstacles in order to provide a better life for their children.
