Gardening In The Desert

My students would benefit from a hydroponics lab in order to study how plants grow in different environments.

This project expired on July 22, 2009.

Guided inquiry into various areas of science can inspire 5th grade students to question and experiment with new ideas. This is the goal of my project.

Students need hands on materials to make science come alive. Textbooks give excellent explanations and examples, but to truly learn the students must experiment on their own. At this high needs, at-risk school, students show a great deal of interest in science, especially when given the opportunity to work through problems. They quickly learn that changing the variables will lead to different conclusions. As a fifth grade science teacher, I realize that what the 120 students I teach each day need is more practice and experience with the practical application of the scientific process.

Hydroponics can be used where traditional means of plant cultivation are difficult, if not impossible. A desert environment provides special challenges when learning to grow necessary fruit and vegetables necessary for the people that live there. Growing food without soil can provide a means of food production in an area where the soil is rocky and full of clay. This is an area that needs to be fully explored.

Your help is vitally needed to assist my students as they learn to find solutions to important questions. You can help empower them to understand that making a difference in this world begins by seeing challenges and looking for answers.
