My special education students are in third grade in an urban public school. This year, they take two challenging and required state tests. Nearly all of my students not only have learning disabilities, but also speak English as their second language, so learning is often a challenge. Furthermore, most of the children come from families with low income, leaving them with fewer life experiences outside of their apartments.

With all of these challenges, learning is difficult for most of my students. When my students pick up a text book, I see them get frustrated because it is not an easy way for them to learn. They do not learn like other children and need more varied activities to keep them interested.

Using hands-on and interactive learning with digital cameras will help engage my students with learning. Being able to use the cameras will excite and motivate them to learn new information in social studies and science. The possibilities are endless. Students can go on photo hunts for simple machines or during a field trip to the zoo they can photograph animals with adaptations. Cameras can help my students learn details in social studies and science, which they are unable to learn from a text book.

With digital cameras my students will not only enjoy learning, but they will also gain the experience of using technology. They will be given an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned without relying solely on the text books. Your help will bring learning to life for my students and get them excited to learn.
