One goal: Increase student activity to decrease student obesity. Physical education; High school grades 10-12; students in a large city; high-need population; traditional schedule.

Our physical education department is transitioning from a sports based curriculum to a fitness based curriculum. We serve a large student population of 3282 high school students in grades 10-12. Currently, we have very little to no fitness equipment that could easily monitor student daily progress.

Pedometers are an easy way to monitor daily movement and activity. Regardless of the student's academic or physical levels a pedometer is easy to read and use in order to track progress within a physical education course. Pedometers provide objective data that the students can record and track on a (private)personal and daily basis.

This generation of students are predicted to be the first generation to die before their parents. This is a sad but sober fact of where our future generation is heading. In general, their physical health is declining daily as a result of inactivity. By providing our school with pedometers we can measure the movement of all of our students irregardless of their race, gender, physical health or academic ability. Our goal, with help from the donors at Donor's Choose, is to increase student activity to decrease student obesity. Pedometers will provide objective data to track and monitor and give our students steps to measure on their way to a healthy future.
