Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

While showing films in the classroom often gets a bad reputation, my students and I have had thrilling moments of revelation and discussion through the use of relevant DVD clips. I teach ninth and tenth grade English at a large (2,000+ students)school in New York. The majority of these students spend an hour or more traveling by bus or subway to make it to school on time. 85% of the student population is eligible for free or reduced price lunches. Our school is struggling in the category of "student performance." My students are very aware of our school's dismal graduation rate (nearly 35% of students graduate in four years). It is important to me to constantly be on the look out for new and exciting methods of engagement to keep my students focused on their goals.

One of these methods is through the use of multiple types of learning. Students who are the most reluctant to participate in a class discussion based on a chapter recently read are often the first to volunteer to make a comparison between how a character is represented in a book versus the movie. The problem is that there is a trap: the "read the book/watch the movie" trap. It is much more effective to provide students with clips of films related to the literature we study AS WE STUDY IT. It is nearly impossible to do this without a.) racking up loads of rental fees b.) subscribing to the highest level of Netflix c.) owning the movies. It is my hope that my students will be able to learn through the last option.

In order to engage as many students in as many ways as possible, my classroom needs a set of DVDs aligned with our framework units. Several of the movies are best shown in two versions (older and more recent). Students have made profound observations about the differences in these movies. As 9th and 10th graders, my students study Of Mice and Men, A Raisin in the Sun, Speak, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Night.

With your help, my students will look past education as a cycle of note-copying and lectures. They will learn to become lifelong learners excited about the presence of literature in film. Please help us fulfill our plans to critically examine books through film.
