I teach 6th grade Math to some of our countries next community, state, and national leaders. They will be some of our bankers, builders, entrepreneurs, and cashiers.

Every year my students order a meal from a menu, keeping in mind how much money they have to spend, and then they learn to figure sales tax and how to leave a tip for service in a restaurant. This year I would like to incorporate how to make change.

I would like to purchase play money, coins and bills, to let students practice counting money back. I would also like to purchase a board game centered around an "Allowance" to reinforce skills needed to earn, count, save, and spend money while living within their means.

I get a feeling of disappointment when I make a purchase and the cashier relies on the computer to tell them how much change to give me and they do so without counting it back. If I hand them coins with my bills quite often I can see confusion on their face. If I question them on the amount of change I receive often they can't explain why they gave me the amount they did. If you will support my project you will help these kids learn the value of a dollar and how to make change from one.
