I teach ninth-grade English to two groups of low-performing students. 80% of these students are non-white and many read well below grade level. One problem with the district text-books is that the story selections are geared toward at or above reading grade-level. Often, the selections are the same ones that have been used in English classes for generations and bear little relevance for today's teen. I have had much success using modern literature that deals with issues that today's sophisticated youth can identify with. One such book is "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers. The book, written as a screen-play, is about a 16 year-old black young man on trial for murder. It is a riveting courtroom drama that hooks the student from the first scene. "Monster" has received outstanding reviews from major reviewers including endorsements from education journals and institutions. I would like to request money to buy 50 copies of this book to use in my classroom. I will share the books with another teacher who also teaches two sets of 9th graders. Overall, this year alone, about 200 students will get a chance to read and respond to these novels. Thank you very much for reading this and I hope you take my proposal into consideration.
