Making Memorial Memories

My students need a projection screen that will allow them to project videos they make, such as veterans they have interviewed, and present at various assembly and community functions.

Students learn citizenship through history, and when you add technology to the mix, they are hooked. I am the media coordinator in my K-5 school,I provide collaborative lessons for all the grade levels in my school. It seems that the only advocate for the library is the librarian herself and that is why I feel so passionately that these children deserve to have all the technology resources that are available to schools in other areas. We do not attract the support that the football team and the fine arts department might, but the media center needs to have more than a quality collection of books to serve these children if they are to truly be prepared for 21st century citizenship.

We are a considered a high poverty school but we are rich in community involvement. It is through the outreach to the community that these students will redefine their limitations and extend their thinking. Interviewing veterans from right here in their small rural town will build bridges to relationships that establish a sense of pride in their town and nation.

In collaboration with the AIG teacher at my school we were able to get several flip cameras that students can use to video interviews of veterans and to use later for many literacy projects. We currently have flip cameras and an LCD projector but we have no screen to project the final project on. The extended use of such a piece of equipment is easy to see as students will continually be able to utilize this projector screen beyond this particular project.

Funding is always a factor in the success of any project, but I firmly believe that the students within my school and the community as a whole, will benefit from this donation. Standing alone it might not seem to be such a necessary piece of the puzzle, but if one visualizes the "Making Memorial Memories" project you can understand why this projection screen is vital to all technology film projects. The students at my school would be honored to receive this donation, and I would be so grateful to know that someone out there bought into the projects that help to instill pride, patriotism, and respect in these precious children.
