This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach studio art at an inner-city New York state public high school whose educational focus is on science and the environment. The school is located in a high-needs community, with the majority of our students (80%) qualifying for free lunch. Our student body is almost entirely minority status. The goal of our school is to prepare our population for careers in the sciences and to foster environmental awareness and environmentalism. The studio art classes are mixed grades ranging from 9-12.
The art supplies that I am requesting will enable me to teach a required art curriculum unit for our city. Due to the current economic downturn, school budgets were slashed and I was not able to order the second part of my art budget. I have more than half the materials that are needed (printmaking inks, brayers, printmaking papers, linoleum block cutters) but I am still missing blotting paper, hand-presses, inking trays, linoleum blocks, and foam blocks. In teaching this printmaking unit, I wanted to focus on the art of Elizabeth Catlett, a famous African-American and woman artist. The subject of much of her artwork is social justice. Both her art and life will be an inspiration to the students that I teach.
Now that I have half the equipment, why not help me with the remaining half of art materials (hand presses, inking trays, blotter paper, linoleum blocks, and foam blocks) to help me teach printmaking and introduce my students to an inspiring African-American and woman artist, Elizabeth Catlett? My students will benefit in multiple ways. 1st, they will complete a required unit in printmaking for the city's art-ed curriculum. 2nd, they will learn an artform that technically challenges them and develops critical thinking and problem solving skills in the making of prints. 3rd, they will be introduced to Elizabeth Catlett, an African-American and woman artist whose life and art serve as a source of inspiration and role-model. 4th, they will engage in self-exploration and self-expression in the form of printmaking. Finally many of the materials requested (blotters, hand-presses, and inking trays) will be used over and over again in teaching printmaking as well as for painting, collage, and other art media units.
Your support will ensure that my students receive both a city mandated art education unit and learn an important artform that stresses critical thinking and problem solving. They will also have the ability to learn about the life and art of a significant African-American artist, Elizabeth Catlett, and be given a valuable opportunity to express their own ideas and creativity through the medium of printmaking.
