Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My 30 third grade students live in a high poverty area and attend a school that is over 100 years old. They receive free breakfast and lunch and most attend the after school program on scholarship. The need for supplies in a large city school district is tremendously high but the money available is non-existent. The education budget is being cut millions of dollars. All supplies my students have are provided by myself or generous donors. My students spend each school day working hard to do their best in school. I try to give them all the support and encouragement I can to help them achieve to their highest potential. But unless you have the right tools, it can be a difficult task.

But supplies are short and the demand is high. It is hard to be successful without the proper supplies. Having a sharpened pencil seems so small yet is such a challenging endeavor in my classroom. Their parents are unable to support the classroom with any supplies because they are barely making ends meet in their own homes. Parents work at factories and manufacturing companies that are reducing hours and staff due to the recent economic downturn. I have purchased pencil sharpeners in the past, but they either burn out or break due excessive use. Students need to sharpen their pencils often. When the colored pencils need to be sharpened, we run into more problems. I have one mechanical pencil sharpener and the line is unbelievable long. Sometimes, it takes 10-15 minutes to sharpen a pencil. The educational process breaks down when students lose their train of thought or become distracted by others. It doesn't take long for that to happen with third graders.

My dream is to have 2 high volume electric pencil sharpeners on either side of the classroom to make pencil sharpening an effortless and efficient task. Students would not waste their time standing on line waiting to sharpen their pencils. My 30 third graders would be able to quickly sharpen their pencils and get back to work in a relatively speedy manner. Students wouldn't get terribly distracted and wasted time would be minimal. Best of all would be a class full of happy students (and a happy teacher) with nice sharpened pencils, eager to learn and ready to work.

I have been blessed with very supportive and generous Donorschoose donors in the past and I ask for your support again. Please help me by providing these sharpeners for my students. They will become much more productive during each and every school day. Less time will be wasted and more learning time and student engagement will be the end result. And in turn, my students will have the potential to attain all of their academic goals and feel successful in school.
