Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Middle School English at a low-income school in Los Angeles. The majority of my students are struggling readers whose difficulties in literacy have created an apathetic attitude towards books. Most of my students view reading as a chore that they just don't want to do. My biggest wish is for all my students to not just improve their reading skills, but for them to also participate in reading and discussions with enthusiasm and engagement.

Reading a class novel and having class discussions about the book is a wonderful way to engage readers and improve their literacy skills. Unfortunately, teaching a novel in my class has been impossible due to lack of funds and resources. The class sets of novels in my school's book room are limited and outdated. Due to our current frozen budget, there is no money to buy a new class set of novels to use in my classroom. Consequently, I am left with texts that are irrelevant to my students and leave them increasingly more turned off to reading.

I am requesting a class set of the novel "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers. The novel tells the story of Tookie Williams, a gang member on death row for murder. The book takes the reader through a rigorous and engaging text that is culturally relevant to my students. The novel deals with topics that my students can relate to. Through the teaching of this novel, my hope is that I will engage my students and show them the excitement of reading.

By funding my proposal, you will to empower my students. The novels will be used to teach my students the skills critical to their academic and social futures. With your generous donation, I can help my students gain valuable access to the exciting world of literature.
