Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a New York City Teaching Fellow preparing to begin my third year at P.S. 59 in the Bronx. This public school is committed to ensuring a quality education for all children. This year, I will be collaborative team teaching in an inclusive first grade classroom. This means that my co-teacher and I will be teaching both general education students and students with special needs. Our school is in a low-income neighborhood, and many of the families speak languages other than English in the home. This brings amazing diversity into the classroom, although it does present some difficulties as well. One of the main issues that our students face is that they are not used to reading outside of school. Although they understand reading to be important and something that they need to learn, it is one of our main goals to open children's eyes to the fact that reading can be relaxing and even fun! As a first grade teacher, I get the chance to give my students a great head start on that realization. In order to get the message across to them, my co-teacher and I try to make the room as cozy as possible, to simulate the home environment. We make comfortable reading spots all over the room with small pillows and cushions on milk crates that encourage the kids to curl up and read. However, we would love to make the message even more clear by creating a living room area in the quiet reading section of our room. This child sized living room set includes a colorful sofa and chair, as well as a small coffee table and end table. The coffee table is a perfect spot to hold a basket of books that the class had read together, so they are familiar to the children and easier to read. Just like we as adults keep interesting books on our end tables at home, the first graders will get the hang of being real life readers by doing the same. We want students to feel that picking up a book and spending time with it is just as entertaining as their game boy or the t.v. By having this furniture set in the classroom, our students will feel right at home as they snuggle up with a good book. Hopefully, as they grow accustom to relaxing on a sofa or chair and reading, they will carry this action into their home life as well! It is a good habit that will last them a lifetime.
