Turn Too Hot to Think! into Smokin' Hot Thinking!

My students need a portable air conditioner.

"Ms. S, it's too hot in here to think!" After hearing these words again and again even in the middle of of a Pennsylvania November, I realized I had to try to rectify the uncomfortable temperature problem in my classroom. I teach English to 9th and 10th grade students in a high-need urban community, where many students are working on making up a more than two-year gap in their achievement levels.

A big obstacle my students and I have faced this year has been attempting to learn in a physically uncomfortable classroom. My classroom is an internal space with no windows, and no matter the weather outside, it's always burning up in the classroom. With absolutely no circulation in the space, I have three fans going at all times, but the students have trouble hearing over them, argue about where the fans should be pointed, and chase papers that fly all over the room from the breeze. Many of my students have allergies and asthma and complain about the conditions in my class. While my students bravely continue to come to class, I believe they can't be expected to learn and achieve at the highest levels possible if their physical needs aren't met.

I am hoping to provide my students with a portable air conditioner unit in order to make the space comfortable. If I can lower the temperature in the class to a reasonable level, I can eliminate all the wasted time spent discussing the heat and focus on improving student achievement. While it may seem like a trivial matter, helping us alleviate the temperature strain will almost certainly remove just one more barrier to my students' success.
