My students need a digital camera capable of taking closeup photos of a collection of prehistoric projectile points.

My students are a motivated bunch. Last year they formed an archaeology club, the only one in our state. On their own time and with their own money, with great support from the school, community and parents, they have participated in a series of archaeological excavations, working as full partners with top professionals and the graduate anthropology department of a local university.

Last spring, a unique opportunity dropped into our lap. After a visit to a 9,000 year-old Native-American quarry near our school, a group of graduate students and professors were invited back to our middle school to see a collection of projectile points (arrowheads) that have been hanging there since 1973. The professors were astounded! None of the points was less than 7,000 years old. Some were as old as 11,000 years. The school district has removed the collection and will permit the club to curate it, developing a database to share the collection and conducting a number of studies to be published in peer-review journals. We have a computer. The university will help us out with the software, however our camera will not do the closeup work necessary to document the collection.

We are asking donors to contribute so that we can buy a good quality camera, a camera bag and a tripod that we can use in the archaeology lab. With this equipment, we will be able to create the database of projectile points and begin work that should result in a publishable study. It is rare that students are able to work directly with artifacts and do creative, original scientific research.

We need your help. While we do get support from the school and community, we are responsible for all of our expenses. Your donation will permit the archaeology club to conduct research into the prehistory of our area and publish the results. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the students, one that you can make happen.
