Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a teacher at a Title-I school, it's hard to ignore the feeling that I want to give my students everything – especially when it comes to reading. I teach in a first grade classroom full of eager, rambunctious 6 and 7 year olds, and it's my goal that the skills they learn in my classroom will help them succeed in their future classrooms. Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch and many of them had their first experience with a book on their first day of school. First grade is a critical year for reading development. Along with learning to read, my students need to develop fluency skills - the ability to read quickly and accurately. Without fluency, students have difficulty understanding what they are reading. Fluency can be taught, and during reading instruction I monitor my students and encourage them to read fluently. However, there is not enough time in the day to individually model and correct every student in my classroom. One of the most prized centers in my classroom is our listening center. It is during their time at the listening center that my students have the chance to hear fluent reading. It is the most helpful for my lowest readers who can sit with a book at learn how to follow along and keep up with a reader. We currently have a listening library with about 20 books, but over the first semester of the school year their use has been exhausted. Just the other day one of my students told another group member “Don’t choose another boring book!” and “Isn’t there one we didn’t listen to yet?” What my students need is a new variety of books to listen to during our center time. An improved selection will renew their interest in the listening center and will afford them additional practice with their fluency. Listening to new books will take them out of the comfort zone that overly familiar books has created for them and will encourage them to improve their listening and reading skills. With your help my students can continue to learn critical reading skills. By helping to fund this proposal, you can help ensure that my students become successful, fluent readers – something that can never be taken from them. These books will help our room by providing my students with a new selection of classic and popular children's books that will capture their interest and encourage them to become fluent readers.
