My students need 2 buses from Alum Rock Elementary School District to transport them from San Jose to the Natural Bridges State Park in Santa Cruz to see the yearly Monarch Butterfly migration. This is a class trip to enrich our Science Unit on the Life Cycle of Butterflies.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach 2nd grade in a low income public school district in CA. Our district is made up of a majority of students who come from impoverished homes.

In December, we will be doing a Unit in our Science Curriculum about the Life Cycle of Butterflies. Natural Bridges State Park has a yearly migration of Monarch Butterflies and will bring the subject to life for our students. Not only does the Monarch Butterfly Migration tie into our unit, but this will be the first time ever that many of our students will get to see the beach. This will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for them, as many of our students don't have the means to travel. Our school district lacks the funding to provide field trips to our students, which often means that it is up to the teachers to find funding. Unfortunately, many of our teachers are unable to provide real life experiences due to the lack of funding in our school district.

Our grade level needs 2 buses to transport 5 2nd Grade classes and 1 Special Education class to the Natural Bridges State Park. This will benefit 120 students, including one class consisting of students with special needs.

In providing bus transportation, you will make it possible for our students to have a field trip to enrich their learning and keep them interested in school. Your help will benefit our students long term by taking Science out of a text book, and bringing it to life for them. Too many of our students are losing interest in school because they can't connect the material to real life experiences. This will be an experience that they will never forget. Your support will impact these students in more ways than one by providing them with an opportunity that would otherwise be out of their reach. This will be the first time many of our students will get to see the beach and experience untouched nature.
