Viva La Música!

My students need an iPod Classic and Composite AV cable to learn Latino themed musical lessons and watch selections and videos.

Ms. C.
Grades 6-8

We want to be active and informed citizens of the global community! We have almost sixty percent of our ethnically diverse students qualifying for the federal free and reduced lunch program. Poverty and at-risk behavior problems are prevalent. But there is hope. Our students are enthusiastic and respond well to innovative practices. I transferred to this school during the 2007-2008 school year to start a foreign language program of study. I currently teach a high school credit course for accelerated eighth grade students, a conversational language course to seventh graders, and a multicultural explorations class to sixth graders. The enrollment in my classes increased twenty-seven percent from last year to this year because of the energetic and varied lessons we study. The word is out--study a foreign language and become a citizen of the world! The first day of school, I administered a student interest survey and the vast majority of my students listed listening to music as their favorite hobby. Some even said they thought the hardest thing about coming back to school was leaving their iPods behind. Frequently, students ask me to translate Spanish lyrics to songs they like. I incorporate music in my cultural lessons because it is an important part of Spanish culture. But it has always been a few short lessons with a few examples of music from various Spanish-speaking countries. This year I want to include contemporary Latin American music and artists because its popularity has skyrocketed in the last ten years. Based upon the students’ interests, my goal is to incorporate more music into my weekly cultural lessons. I have contacted my curriculum supervisor and now have access to over 200 songs, lyrics, and videos. The problem is how to present these songs in the various lessons. I have grouped the types of music: traditional, contemporary, pop, flamenco, salsa, tejano, etc. I have created activities based upon another student interest survey and the advice from colleagues. The technology to present these lessons is a problem however. Playing excerpts from various compact discs is cumbersome and the students are losing interest during the transition time. My students would respond to the use of iPod technology (it is against school rules for them to bring one to school). I am not above using the idea of this forbidden element to encourage interest. Also, they would love watching videos that would play from the Spanish music library from the iPod on the television in my classroom with the composite AV cable connection. We will study and analyze lyrics and the language used in Latino Music. My hope is that language learning will become real and useful, not just to order food in a restaurant or during infrequent travel, but in their daily lives outside of the classroom setting. My students will become familiar with the contemporary culture of Spain, Central America, and South America through their favorite pastime—la música.
