Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

How do you get high school students excited about learning parts of speech? Play Mad Libs! How do you get them to think on their feet? Play Scattergories and Cranium! How do you encourage them to vary their word choice? Play Scrabble! What do all these activities have in common? Two things - Learning and fun! Who knew those two words could go together in English class? I teach study skills and English at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology. My students LOVE games! While I use a lot of my own, I've been thinking that adding regular board games could not only help my students learn, but also help my classroom management. When students do tasks correctly (get out their books quickly, for example), one minute of F.A.T. is added. FAT stands for Fun Activity Time. The way to make sure FAT still includes learning is to use these fun word games. I'm really excited about using this as a reward and classroom management system.
