Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Academically/Intellectually Gifted classes in Duplin County, North Carolina. Our students come from a rural, low-income community. Our school population is around 463 students of mixed socioeconomic backgrounds: the majority is African American at 65%, followed by Caucasian at 25%, and Latino at 10%. Our school cannot afford to purchase class sets of books. We will do extensive work with the books on 2008-2009 BATTLE OF THE BOOKS OFFICIAL LIST. Students are urged to get a head start by reading as many of these novels as they can over the summer. Students will improve their skills by completing activities related to reading in a content area, cooperative learning and multiple intelligences. They will do reading circles on various novels. This unit will be integrated with library skills (Battle of the Books Team), social studies, math, and technology. Students will be encouraged to view reading a good book as a vehicle to travel the world and understand another culture without ever having to leave home! The resource needs are as follows for this unit: “My Life in Dog Years 30 copies “Journey to the River Sea" 30 copies This experience prepares them for the next grade level as well as helps them prepare for upcoming standardized tests. These are not typical studies for students of middle school age, so I know reading these works will challenge them!
