Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Business Education Teacher in a Middle School where my lower socio-economic students are rising above other schools in the district in testing. My students have a deep desire to prove to the District that they are every bit as good as any other student coming from middle and upper income homes. They work hard at every assignment and their creativity is being challenged in my Business Computer Technology course through Desktop Publishing and Multimedia presentations. At the wealthier schools, PTA's are able to fund most equipment needs since the parents are so active. In my school, most parents cannot provide the necessary time to support PTA activities and fundraisers due to their employment needs and lack of excess income.
Recently, our monochrome laser printer broke and we were told that there are no funds available to provide us with another. This has put a tremendous strain on myself, the teacher, who needs to keep accurate grades by assessing the work of the students. The students also have lost their motivation and their excitement for completing the work since they no longer have a hard copy of their work to display or take home proudly.
I teach approximately 150 students each semester and each of them will be losing out on the enjoyment of learning how to create powerful displays, presentations, or even the simplest of flyers due to the lack of a functional printer.
I am looking to them being able to print in color with a laser printer where we will also be able to study the technological advancements that have come along with digital cameras. Without a printer though, it will be hard to capture their excitement.
My students are hard-working, efficient, cost-conscientious students who I will weigh against any other middle school student in not only the District but anywhere. It matters not to them that they may not have the nicest clothes or that their parent(s) cannot give them the "extras" that others have. They come to my class to learn and expand their knowledge. A color laser printer would help me tap into their excitement and also will help open the technological world to them.
