I teach 5th grade Social Studies in a high poverty small school district in Arkansas that has had many financial problems this past few school years. Our community is very supportive but is a small, low income district.

My fifth graders have developed a love for reading this last school year. Our Social Studies curriculum has changed drastically in the last year to match the state frameworks. This has made it so that our textbooks are obsolete.

My Social Studies classes have enjoyed using young adult historical fiction to explore different time periods in history. A time period that they would enjoy learning more about is the American Revolution. It is so important for students to understand this era since it is when our nation was born.

"Kate and the Spies" is about a young girl that is drawn into the Revolutionary War. It will appeal to students since she is their age and will make it seems much more authentic than a textbook every could. "If You Lived In the Time of the American Revolution" is a wonderful fact book to have the students use as an introduction to the time period. It is done on a level that is understandable to them. Your support and help will make history actually come alive and not just be something on paper. The students in this small Arkansas community can benefit from your support and learn to appreciate our America heritage through quality literature.
