Our classroom serves 7-12 students ages 14-22 with multiple special needs. The students are hard working and bright from a variety of ethnic, economic and family backgrounds. They are bussed from many surrounding cities and towns in two different states because local programs could not provide for their unique combinations of special needs. Although our host school has only 12% of students receiving on the federal free lunch program, 50% of my students qualify. Most of the students are wheelchair users, many are hearing and/or visually impaired and all have some level of communication impairment.
Half of my students have been in my class for four years or longer. We have been using the same format for our morning meeting that entire time. Additionally the materials we are using we purchased out of the teachers own pocket at the beginning of her career 12 years ago. We rely on the internet for current event information which we have to adapt ourselves to make developmentally appropriate for our class. We need a new format, new materials and access to better current events information at our level of understanding.
A new calendar that incorporates learning about the weather would be perfect for us. Add to that a question of the day chart that each student could answer with their alternative communication device and we would be really reviving our old, boring morning meeting. Then bring our current events to life with Weekly Reader and Time for Kids and we will be able to start every day with a bang!
How we start our day determines how it will proceed. Our old morning meeting format is limited by our old materials and limited access to current events information. You can help change all that and make every day a great day, just by changing how we start it.
