There is no denying the ubiquity and flexibility of digital material in today's world. As teachers, we must learn to master digital media and open this rich world of pictures, videos, and sounds to our students. By bringing digital media into the classroom, teachers can enhance student learning and motivation. Once funded, this grant would provide the materials necessary to create a library of digital media which would be used by the 110 students in our Regents Earth Science program. The digital library would include archived video, photo resources, and handouts and could be accessed by students and teachers for years to come. The library would become an ever-growing resource of many lessons. One of the first units I would like to create would be to address the relationship between people, technology, and the environment. In the global warming lesson of this unit, I would collect video of news programs which discuss current environmental treaties, local stories detailing the local impact of global warming, and interviews with scientists. I will combine these video resources on a DVD. Students would watch the video clips and discuss the current evidence for and consequences of global warming. Students will then investigate further on their own and develop suggestions for local and national environmental policy. They will create handouts and presentations detailing their plans. The students' own handouts and presentations will then be added to the digital library and can be shared with future classes. The grant would fund a video capture device to record video from television that has been approved for recording for educational viewing*. These video clips would be combined using software that could burn the video to blank DVD's for viewing and storage. Other software would be used to create sophisticated digital presentations and handouts. *Please note: all video and other resources not created by the teacher would only be used after legal permission for education viewing has been granted.
