Using Technology to Experience the Real World

We're searching for the real world! I teach a high school mathematics class designed for students who are not very motivated and not very good at math. But, I have been able to motivate them to learn a variety of math topics using real-life applications that catch their attention. For example, we have learned about analyzing data using baseball statistics in an excel spreadsheet. We have also learned about fractals using Geometer's Sketchpad.

My students love the CBS Numbers show, which uses math to solve crimes. There are mathematics activities that accompany each episode. We spend several days studying the math and then for their reward they watch the accompanying episode. There are other "forensic type" activities that we could be doing. These activities require the use of a data collection device, which we do not have. My students would love to do these forensic activities where they use math and "solve a crime".

In order for us to complete the "forensic" type activities we need a data collection tool. Since we have access to Casio graphing calculators, a Casio EA-200 would work with our calculators. This tool will allow us to collect real-world data and transfer that data to graphing calculators. Then, students can analyze the graphs and the equations and make generalizations about what could happen next.

Your help will enable my students to experience math in a positive light. My students come to me feeling bad about their math abilities. I tell my students that everyone has a gift. Math may not be their gift, but each of us can achieve much more than we thought possible. Your help will allow my students to continue to grow as math students and to learn to overcome their difficulties.
