Mrs. B. Harmony Elementary School
Westover, PA Grades 9-12

I work as a school nurse for a very rural school district where I work with students grades K-12. I also act as an Adviser for the school's BUSTED club which promotes anti-tobacco education and activities for the school and community.

Tobacco education in this school and community is a difficult task since the rural/mining/farming culture is heavily supportive of tobacco use. Many of my students have both mothers and fathers that smoke in the home.

Our BUSTED club conducts education and anti-tobacco advocacy activities throughout the school year but this year on May 29th we would like to hold an Anti-tobacco carnival in honor of World No Tobacco Day. We have a variety of activities planned which include a tie dye tee shirt booth, Anti-tobacco Ad station, etc. This carnival will showcase not only the hazards of tobacco use but students will be able to receive information on smoking cessation and resources on how to quit. There will be students speakers who will give testimonials about their experiences with tobacco and why they would like to see a smoke free community. The project will help address a serious public health concern and bring students together in a fun and educational way. I feel that the students will remember this event and be able to take home information and ideas to their families and promote a smoke free community.

By supporting our project and helping us acquire the resources needed to conduct this event, donors can feel confident that they made a difference in this community. Working to change the perceptions of this "smoking culture" has to start with our students as we work to education and empower one generation at a time.
