Mr. Ma The Frederick Douglass Academy
New York, NY Grades 6-8

Walk into our classroom for Students with Special Needs and despite their very different needs, all the students have a desire to do well in class. In this 6th through 12th school, the students know, on some level, the dire need to achieve in these high stakes times. They know the standards are high and they need to rise to the occasion.

Now more than ever, students need to immediately see the value of the classes they take. In English Language Arts, the students know they will need to read and write, but they often fail to see why they need to learn different types of literature and writing. Their limited exposure to classic and contemporary forms of literature is largely due to the fact that there is not enough supplies to go around and limited ways for Students with Special Needs to access the knowledge

Weekly Reader's READ Magazine provides an excellent balance of classic and contemporary literature including plays in a bite sized way. The readings are presented in a way that is less intimidating than an entire novel. These are paralleled with a section focused solely on writing skills. READ Magazine creates excitement in the classroom as it is a periodical that the students look forward to and as a consumable commodity, feel ownership over. READ connects high interest texts written on grade level with classic literature to create high interest in traditionally much more difficult texts. The prior knowledge built through exposure to classic literature will build confidence in students and will fortifying the knowledge base students have to work from.

Your donations makes it possible for a marginalized set of students to get a foothold onto classic literature in an interactive and new way. READ offers students the opportunity to enjoy and emulate writings they may have never been exposed to before, which may unlock a love for the cannon of literature they will be asked to know about for the rest of their educational career.
