Is It Live Or Is It Memorex?

My students need a camcorder to use in projects that range from punny commercials to filked music videos to show how well they have learned in my inquiry classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In this day of AYP and NCLB and focus on testing and teaching to succeed on tests, it is important that students feel they have some investment in their learning. I am creating a classroom that students are excited to enter because they are learning in a way that suits each of them. This is particularly important in a Title I school that is primarily Hispanic and has many students who live well below poverty level.

I have been asked many times how I manage to get students interested and invested in my class. My answer involves two things: I care and I listen. I turn learning over to the students by giving them a general topic and allowing them to choose how to learn about that topic. They learn to research, to build models, to experiment, to develop better questioning skills, to work together, to find resources, and most importantly - they learn how to learn. When it comes time to assess how well they have succeeded, they have control over how they convey what they know. They often will come up with crazy and unique ideas ranging from commercials selling an energy drink (kinetic and potential, don'tcha know) to making music videos for favorite songs and rewriting the words (a process called filking), and even to creating hands-on labs for their fellow classmates.

The enthusiasm my students have for showing me what they learned is amazing. I hate to limit them by not having access to equipment that will let them take their ideas even further by recording them for posterity (or perhaps blackmail when they get older). I want to have a good camcorder for them to use so they can explore their ideas to the fullest and have their achievements to look at years from now.

In this day of fast-paced living and advancing technology, a picture on a refrigerator is almost unheard of, not to mention so old-fashioned. Students want to explore technology and see all that it has to offer. What better way is there than giving them this opportunity to use state-of-the-art tools to create a permanent reminder of their achievements in the classroom.
